Media Production and Studies in Regina is the only university department between Toronto and Vancouver to offer degree programs in both film / media production and film / media studies. We offer an MA in Media Studies and an MFA in Media Production, as well as a BFA in Film and Video Production and a BA / BA Honours in Film Studies, with scholarship opportunities in all of these areas.

MPS has two leading-edge lab facilities funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada: The Interactive Media and Performance Laboratory (IMPL), which houses a multi-media DJ interactive studio and performance space, an ethnomusicology and beat-making lab, archival materials, and student research space; and the New Media Studio Laboratory (NMSL), which provides cameras, workstations, and a sound studio for graduate media / audio creation. We also share the Electronic Composition and Creation Lab (ECCL) with the Department of Music.

Media Production and Studies has hosted several conferences and workshops, including “Making It Like a Man! Masculinities in Canadian Arts and Cultures” (2004); “The Art of Immersive Soundscapes” (2004); “AIS2: Creative Forum and Conference” (2007); “Spaces of Violence, Sites of Resistance: Music, Media and Performance, the annual conference of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (2010); and the Flatland Scratch Seminar / Workshop Series. Forthcoming in September 2010 is “Son Image: The Legacies of Jean-Luc Godard.”

In MPS we encourage students to develop their creative and critical skills by producing projects, essays and theses across all genres and styles, from Hollywood musicals and the avant-garde to new media and interactive media and performance. Our students have gone on to award-winning careers in Saskatchewan, across Canada, and internationally, working as independent filmmakers, producers and scriptwriters; in series television; as crew on national and international narrative and documentary productions; as installation artists; and as programmers, archivists, and educators.
